Howell's Opera House to Host Oktoberfest

People say that everybody's Irish on St. Patrick's Day, so it stands to reason that you can be German during Oktoberfest.  The Livingston Arts Council will be hosting Oktoberfest at the historic Howell Opera House on Friday, October 3rd, beginning at 6pm.

There will be live music, craft beer, German wine and a full German dinner for $25/person.  Want to come and listen to the music and partake of the cash bar only?  That's just $10/person. Get more info and buy tickets at:

Howell Winter Marketplace Open For The Season

The Farmer’s Markets are closed until Spring 2014, and while that means we’re not going to have fresh local produce, there are still some great options for local shopping. The Howell Winter Marketplace is one of those choices.

It is open 2 Sundays a month through April 2014, from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm.  Some of the items that will be available are fresh eggs and butter, baked good (including gluten-free products), jewelry, arts and crafts.  A new local coffee shop, Teeko’s, will also be on site to sell coffee.

The Howell Winter Marketplace is at the historic Howell Opera House at 123 W. Grand River, Howell 48843.  The schedule for this season is:  November 3 & 17, December 1 & 8, January 5 & 19,  February 2 & 16, March 2 & 16, April 6 & 13.  For more information, visit the Howell Opera House website and click on ‘events’ or call 517-540-0065. While you’re on the website, check out the other great activities that they are hosting for the community.

Livingston County Real Estate Market

The good news is that I've been so busy that I've let my blogging fall off.  The bad news is that I've let my blogging fall off.

Generally speaking, the housing market is finally looking up!  I know you've been reading that the number of sales is down - and that's true.  But they're down because we have such a shallow inventory.  Almost every home that I've listed in the last 9 months or so has gone under contract within 15-25 days, had multiple offers and sold for above list price.  Short sales aren't included as they take longer and have special problems for many potential buyers.

The days on market (DOM), is flat compared to last year, but average sales prices are up almost 9% for single family homes and a whopping 46% for condos. Vacant land sales have jumped, and there's a lot of new builds happening in the South Lyon area. All the while we're at extreme lows for mortgage interest rates, too.

Things are also happening with commercial properties.  Downtown Brighton is bursting at the seams.  Good luck finding a space there!  Downtown Howell has some interesting things going on, too, and there's no doubt that the Opera House project has helped a lot.  Watch for a full-fledged comeback there, soon. There are plenty of commercial spaces on major business routes in the surrounding townships, though, some in very high traffic areas.

I'm working with numerous buyers that can't find a house they want. Many of our showings get cancelled because the house goes under contract before we can get into it.  Still, it's an exciting time to be in Real Estate.

If you have specific questions, please drop me an email or give me a call.  And I'm really looking for listings.  If you know somebody that is considering selling their home, please ask them to give me a call.

Howell Opera House gala Celebrates 126th Anniversary

The Howell Opera House will celebrate its 126th anniversary with a gala event from 8pm till midnight on December 29th. Actually a day early of the true anniversary of December 30th 1881, funds will be used to help with the second floor restoration.

Tickets are $85/person ($75 if you're a member) and Livingston Arts Council organizers expect a capacity crowd of 200. Dancing, a silent auction, hors d' oeuvres and tours of the second floor will be on the agenda.

The Opera House was closed by the Fire Marshall in 1924 and had been in use as a venue for entertainment, speeches by presidential candidates to high school graduations and even a short stint as Livingston County Circuit Court.

The long shuttered second floor (above Gill-Roy's Hardware Store) helped to preserve this gem of a structure. For reservations, call the Arts Council at 517-540-0065.
